Introducing Koa-A-Hi, a one-of-a-kind original scent composition inspired by Taiwanese opera. This scent composition explores the world of Taiwanese opera through shifting perspectives and paints an olfactory tribute to this richly evocative traditional art form. Through the creative blending of meticulously selected exceptional and unusual raw materials, we construct a montage of scenes, memories and cultural imagery, ultimately portraying an olfactory impression centered on Taiwanese opera. Tracing back to its origin, the composition takes Yilan County, Taiwan as its point of departure, integrating local elements as a core source of inspiration where regional culture and sensory experience converge. The warm sweetness of Yilan’s traditional tongue-shaped pastries and signature peanut brittle intertwines with Yilan’s muscatel black tea and Chin-Hsuan milk oolong, forming a delicate, nostalgic backdrop. It evokes both the steam of freshly baked confections and the endearing sensations of everyday life in earlier times. From this foundation, a vivid scene gradually unfolds. One of the most familiar forms of Taiwanese opera takes place on a temporary stage set in a temple courtyard. Here, in the bustle before the performance begins, the aroma of traditional pastries and drifting tea fragrance fills the air as the crowd gathers, awaiting the curtain to rise. Through this olfactory memory, the scent composition draws the wearers into a moment softly veiled in nostalgia, allowing Taiwanese opera to extend beyond the stage and become a memory that can be smelled. The work also pays tribute to the earliest form of Taiwanese opera, known as Loh Te Sau, reconstructing its grassroots vitality through scent. The atmosphere of the sacred Ka-Tang tree and its surroundings is woven into the composition, paying homage to this sacred tree at Kiat-Thau-Hun in Inn-Suann, Yilan, which is regarded as the birthplace of Taiwanese opera. Beneath its canopy, wind drifts through the leaves with a refreshing clarity, while damp earth and lingering humidity in the air shape a grounded, living texture. Sunlight filters through the branches, warming the soil into a subtle atmospheric scent. These ephemeral fragments of memory are distilled into fragrance and meticulously preserved within the bottle. The perspective then expands to the audience. Before the performance begins, the mesmerizing scent of paddy rice blossoms drifts in from the fields surrounding the temple courtyard, mingling with moist soil and young green stalks. Beneath the shade of banyan trees, spectators gather as a gentle breeze carries the breath of the landscape into a space filled with voices and percussion. The warmth of human presence softly disperses into the air, shaping the distinct vitality and atmosphere of the temple courtyard. These vivid and evocative scents belong equally to Taiwan’s rural landscape and its temple culture. The perspective then shifts toward the stage. Upon the temporary platform, performers emerge with traditional opera costumes in motion, gestures and vocals unfolding beneath the lights. Heated bulbs release a faintly scorched note, merging with the powdery sweetness of theatrical makeup into a distinct olfactory halo that is unique to the stage. Warm, rich and tactile, it carries the lingering memory of performance itself. This layer resonates with the tea, pastries, paddy field and temple grounds notes below the stage, creating an intriguing juxtaposition. On stage, light and heat, performance and fictions; off stage, the memories of gatherings and everyday life. Through the language of scent, both realms become intertwined, allowing Koa-A-Hi to move fluidly between stage and audience, completing a dual narrative of performance and life, illusion and reality.
Due to the nature and quality of the raw materials used, the scent will continue to age beautifully in the bottle with time when properly stored. It is normal to have some sediments/separations in this scent due to the nature of the raw materials used. Just gently shake well before applying it.
PRE-ORDER SPECIAL GIFT: 11TH ANNIVERSARY GIVEAWAY
Receive one (1) FREE exclusive “What Can I Hold You With” 7.5ml Eau de Parfum with each pre-ordered bottle of Koa-A-Hi extrait. This exclusive EDP is reserved solely for Koa-A-Hi extrait pre-orders at Auphorie.com. Limited quantity only, first come, first served. Inspired by the poem authored by Jorge Luis Borges, “What Can I Hold You With” unfolds as a poetic and deeply romantic composition, shadowed by a melancholic, rugged beauty. Within it, we sought to distill and translate the poem’s imagery into the language of scent. Lean streets and ragged suburbs, the lonely moon, bullets, as well as the fading memory of a yellow rose seen at sunset. The composition captures the emotional intensity woven through Borges’ words. Rum, bitters and an aromatic melange of herbs conjure an atmosphere steeped in nostalgia and loneliness, while aged tobacco and a dark, mysterious accord of metal and gunpowder notes further deepen the olfactory impressions. At its heart, a withering yellow rose emerges through a cold, melancholic veil of iris, orris root and rugged woods, bringing the entire olfactory portrayal hauntingly to life.
