Introducing San Xing Dui, the grand finale of our 10th anniversary special series. This scent composition stands as both the culmination of our decade-long journey in perfumery and the prelude to a new chapter of olfactory exploration. The extrait draws inspiration from the mystical San Xing Dui civilization, reimagined creatively in a contemporary context through a carefully considered scent structure and a selection of meticulously sourced raw materials. Each element has been chosen not only for its olfactory character, but also for its potential to evoke the mystery, the ritualistic aura, and the cultural and geographical significance of this mesmerizing archaeological discovery. In 2019, we launched Bing Ma Yong, an unprecedented olfactory homage to the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang. Now, on the occasion of our 10th anniversary, we return once more to the soil of antiquity and paint an original, one-of-a-kind olfactory portrayal of the San Xing Dui culture, approached from multiple perspectives and expressed through a language of scent.
This scent composition is conceived around the philosophical framework of “yin” and “yang”, expressed through a series of deliberate and well-balanced contrasts that unfold across multiple dimensions. It opens with the luminous freshness of pomelo leaf, pomelo flower and mandarin, imparting a sense of clarity and radiance. This brightness is set in counterpoint to the deeper, weightier elements of the composition, evoking the gleam of ancient bronze statues glimpsed by torchlight within the shadowed ruins of San Xing Dui. As the scent develops, a second “yin-yang” contrast emerges at its heart, where the dewy-fresh elegance of natural rose and jasmine stand in deliberate juxtaposition to the dark, mysterious, and complex character of rare natural blue lotus absolute. The addition of natural lotus leaf absolute introduces a subtly green, interesting herbaceous facet, lending a sense of moisture and life to the flower bouquet. Accents of ginger, Sichuan pepper, and Chinese tea further enrich the composition, infusing the heart with a gentle, sparkling spiciness, and enhancing the interplay of light and shadow. Natural orris butter and iris absolute are incorporated into the composition to evoke the subterranean chill of the San Xing Dui excavation sites. Their refined, cool tonality, tinged with a subtle metallic sheen, alludes to the enigmatic bronze masks and statuary unearthed from the ruins. This cold, mineralic facet is set in deliberate contrast with the warmth of aromatic herbs and spices, creating a nuanced and well-calibrated equilibrium within the composition. Meanwhile, aged incense emerges at the heart of the composition, enveloping the intricate bouquet in a ritualistic and meditative aura that conjures the ceremonial atmosphere of ancient rites.
To evoke the scent of ancient soil of the San Xing Dui excavation sites, vetiver plays a central role in the formulation. The composition features six distinct varieties of vetiver materials, with particular emphasis on three rare, finely aged natural extracts, i.e. a 10-year-aged true Bourbon vetiver oil from Réunion Island, a 25-year-aged wild Ruh Khus from India, and a 30-year-aged wild vetiver oil from Haiti. These materials, selected for their exceptional depth, complexity, and fine maturation, imbue the scent composition with a richly textured, full-bodied, sophisticated earthiness that grounds the composition. In addition to the exceptional aged vetiver oils, the scent composition also features a 12-year-aged wild gaharu buaya oil and a 10-year-aged wild lignum vitae oil. These rare natural materials harmonize seamlessly with the broader palette of the composition, further contributing to its depth and complexity. The wild gaharu buaya oil, when combined with natural wild mushroom absolute and vintage oakmoss absolute, evokes a richly atmospheric image of a damp, moss-covered forest floor. This trio conjures the scent of moist earth and soil, infusing the composition with a vivid and immersive sense of primordial terrain. Meanwhile, the 10-year-aged lignum vitae oil, in harmonious synergy with aged Mysore sandalwood and aged Sichuan thuja wood, imparts a smooth, velvety woodiness characterized by an aromatic, creamy-buttery texture, subtly accented by a delicate floral undertone. The quiet presence of time within all of these aged extracts lends the composition a natural and vivid sense of temporal depth, echoing strongly with the ancient and mysterious spirit of San Xing Dui.
The finely wrought earthy-woody accord at the base is further enriched by the discreet yet profound presence of civet, ambergris, and musk. These classic perfumery materials are meticulously employed with harmony and precision, enhancing the depth and complexity of the composition. Civet imparts a subtle animalic warmth that animates the base with vitality, while ambergris lends a diffusive and luminous quality that gently lifts the denser elements. A carefully balanced blend of musks weaves through the composition, imparting a velvety smoothness and a lingering, skin-like sensuality. Through the intricate layering of rare aged materials, “yin-yang” contrasts, and evocative accords, and accentuated by olfactory references to autochthonous botanicals native to the Sichuan basin where the San Xing Dui culture once flourished, this scent composition emerges as both an artistic statement and a contemplative exploration of time, space, history, and mystery. Inspired by the ancient civilization’s enigmatic relics and ritualistic atmosphere, the composition offers a sensory interpretation that is not only grounded in historical resonance, but also imbued with a sense of contemporary relevance, bridging past and present through the medium of scent. It stands as a tribute to the lost splendour of San Xing Dui, wherein temporal depth, material culture, and intangible heritage coalesce into a singular expression of olfactory artistry.
Due to the nature and quality of the raw materials used, the scent will continue to age beautifully in the bottle with time when properly stored. It is normal to have some sediments/separations in this scent due to the nature of the raw materials used. Just gently shake well before applying it.
