Kenyalang, a scent that honors the sacred rhinoceros hornbill, the cardinal emblem of Sarawak. Drawing deeply from the rich traditions, intricate artistry, and breathtaking natural wonders of the region, this scent composition weaves an olfactory artwork that evokes the profound cultural and environmental heritage of Sarawak. Each note tells a story, guiding the senses through the very essence of its roots. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our journey in crafting original, heritage-inspired scents, Kenyalang becomes the first fragrance to mark this milestone. The rhinoceros hornbill, revered as a symbol of strength, belief, and cultural significance, embodies the spirit of this composition. It reflects our unwavering dedication to creating authentic, meaningful olfactory art pieces that honor the traditions and landscapes that first inspired us.
The scent opens with a radiant burst of Sarawak pineapple, tampoi fruit, and calamansi lime. Their tropical juiciness, complemented by the delicate heat of Sarawak black pepper, creates an inviting introduction that mirrors the vibrant dynamism of Sarawak’s people and their fertile land. Intertwined within is the essence of Sarawak tuak and tepui — fermented glutinous rice and sugarcane wines — adding a distinctive boozy note that infuses the composition with an air of conviviality and hospitality. These traditional drinks evoke the celebratory spirit of the indigenous peoples’ festivities, enriching the composition with a unique, mesmerizing charm. At its heart, Kenyalang blooms into a rich floral symphony. Precious natural flower extracts of red champaca, red frangipani, and white frangipani provide an exotic, lush elegance to the composition, uniting all the notes with seamless harmony.
A distinctive layer of the scent composition reflects the traditional practice of supak smoking, where tobacco leaves are smoked in hollow bamboo logs. This imparts a sweet, earthy aroma that connects the composition to the traditional rituals and customs of Sarawak’s indigenous peoples. Drawing further inspiration from Sarawak’s verdant rainforests and architectural heritage, Kenyalang conjures vivid impressions of its natural and cultural landscapes. Notes of sago palm leaves, Bornean ironwood, and bamboo logs echo the materials used in the construction of the iconic longhouses, which serve as the cornerstone of communal living for many indigenous ethnic groups. Hints of petrichor and oakmoss add to the imagery, evoking the fresh, earthy scent of tropical rain on mossy forest floors. The base of Kenyalang is a gourmand reverie of Sarawak Gula Apong palm sugar, cocoa, and vanilla bean. This delectable foundation is enriched by the deep, resinous warmth of aged Bornean benzoin, intertwined with sensual animalistic touches of ambergris and musk, creating a rich, sophisticated, and long-lasting finish. Kenyalang transcends the boundaries of fragrance. It is an olfactory tribute to Sarawak, the Land of the Rhinoceros Hornbill — its people, its culture, and the majestic hornbill that soars above it all, forever entwined with the land’s spirit and soul.
Due to the nature and quality of the raw materials used, the scent will continue to age beautifully in the bottle with time when properly stored. It is normal to have some sediments/separations in this scent due to the nature of the raw materials used. Just gently shake well before applying it.
