Oud Jiuselu draws inspiration from the renowned mural of the 257th grotto of Dunhuang’s Mogao Grottoes, olfactorily depicting the ancient jataka lore and legend of the nine-colored deer king. To vividly and creatively paint this olfactory art, we employ several approaches to imagine and convey the stories of Jiuselu and Dunhuang. Starting with the sacred flowers, where blue lotus (waterlily) and white waterlily bloom, evoking a tranquil and mysterious aura. We use various precious natural extracts of these waterlilies, including our extremely rare, custom-made enfleurage extracts. To further enhance the concept of Buddhist mural and grotto art, natural extracts of Buddha’s hand citron and Tie Guan Yin tea add layers of complexity to the scent, enriching the historical and cultural connections between the scent composition and the art of Dunhuang. Moreover, we meticulously curate and select a number of raw materials that are geographically connected to Dunhuang and Gansu Province. These include Li Guang apricot, “huizao” jujube, and “shaguo” crabapple, forming a harmonious accord inspired by Dunhuang’s traditional local delight, the apricot peel concoction. Additionally, Chinese dwarf cherry (known as “gaiguo”) and Chinese rhododendron flower, both locally sourced, contribute to the composition by complementing the rest of the raw materials. These raw materials are then blended with Kushui rose, a variety historically cultivated in Kushui township, Gansu Province. For the Kushui rose, we use various natural extracts, including a rare natural enfleurage, to build a vivid, non-caricature olfactory image of the flower, similar to the waterlilies. A light touch of mixed spices, including young clove fruit, Chinese white cardamom, and cassia bark, is added to the heart of the composition. These spices are commonly used in many classical Chinese incenses. Like other members of the Imperial Oud Collection, we select various types of natural oud oils from different regions, including Chinese, Indian, and Southeast Asian ouds, to craft a sophisticated oud profile that fits this composition. The use of vintage oud oils, some aged for over thirty years, provides great depth, richness, and complexity. Qi-nan oils further enrich and complement the other raw materials, especially the waterlilies. To complete this scent composition, natural orris butter, finely-aged Mysore sandalwood, amber, vetiver, ambergris, and musk are harmoniously blended, providing a velvety, silky-smooth foundation.
Due to the nature and quality of the raw materials used, the scent will continue to age beautifully in the bottle with time when properly stored. A whopping 40% concentration of pure perfume oil in this extrait provides the most luxurious experience while remains easy to use at the same time. A little goes a long way. It is normal to have some sediments/separations in this scent due to the nature of the raw materials used. Just gently shake well before applying it.
