Oud Madame Huarui, a scent composition inspired by the legendary Chinese historical figure, Madame Huarui, the beloved concubine of Emperor Meng Chang of the Later Shu Kingdom during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Crafted from meticulously chosen raw materials, this composition narrates her story through scent. The name Madame Huarui evokes the image of the vibrant crimson threads of saffron, symbolizing her extraordinary beauty and graceful poise, recalling the name bestowed upon her by the emperor. Alongside saffron, the invigorating notes of citron and tangerine open the composition with a bold and uplifting energy. In Chinese folklore, Madame Huarui is venerated as one of the Twelve Flower Goddesses. Coinciding with the tenth month of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, this scent composition features the “Sanzui Furong” Hibiscus Mutabilis, which is the representative flower of the tenth month and is deeply connected to Madame Huarui, who is revered in folklore as the flower goddess of the tenth month. Many tales and legends link her to the Furong hibiscus, including the story of how Chengdu got its nickname "Rong-Cheng", the City of Furong Hibiscus. During Madame Huarui’s lifetime, Emperor Meng Chang, knowing it was her favorite flower, ordered Furong hibiscus to be planted along the ancient city walls of Chengdu, the kingdom’s capital city at that time. Since then, the nickname persisted and the Furong hibiscus flower remains a symbol of the city until today. In homage to her favorite flower, we customize a very rare and unusual natural extract of the “Sanzui Furong” hibiscus flower and feature it in this scent composition. “Sanzui Furong” hibiscus is known for its petals that change color throughout the day, symbolizing Madame Huarui’s enchanting beauty and her mesmerizing legacy. In addition to her beloved Furong hibiscus, Madame Huarui was also known to adore peonies and gardenias. For this, we introduce our custom-developed extracts of Chinese peonies and Chinese gardenias. These green, fresh and dewy floral extracts blend seamlessly with the Furong hibiscus, creating a vivid, graceful and enchanting heart note that evokes the imagery of her imperial garden in full bloom. To further bring Madame Huarui's story to life, we drew inspiration from the historical Chinese incense known as Madame Huarui's Imperial Boudoir Incense. Based on a historical recipe recorded in the “Xiang-Sheng: The Historical Records of Scents”, we created a modern rendition of this incense, believed to have been originally crafted by Madame Huarui herself, and incorporated it into this scent as a sophisticated fragrance accord. This accord is built from carefully selected raw materials, featuring authentic artisanal oud oils from various regions, including rare, 20-year-aged vintage oud from Hainan and Nha Trang. These oud oils, paired with qi-nan, provide a rich, luscious and enigmatic base for the composition. Finely-aged white sandalwood and vintage cliff cedar blend seamlessly, while frankincense is incorporated in a way that remains faithful to the historical recipe. Among these remarkable raw materials, one particularly rare ingredient from the original incense recipe stands out, a material seldom used in modern scent compositions. To complete this incense accord, we have developed our own natural extract from certain types of mollusk - a shell-derived material featured in many classical Chinese incenses. This extract undergoes meticulous processing that adheres to traditional Chinese incense-making techniques, adding an intriguing depth and complexity to the scent and enhancing its uniqueness. The base is completed by sensual notes of musk, ambergris, vetiver, amber and orris butter, creating a lustrous and silky-smooth foundation and completing this mesmerizing olfactory journey that tells the timeless story of Madame Huarui.
Due to the nature and quality of the raw materials used, the scent will continue to age beautifully in the bottle with time when properly stored. A whopping 40% concentration of pure perfume oil in this extrait provides the most luxurious experience while remains easy to use at the same time. A little goes a long way. It is normal to have some sediments/separations in this scent due to the nature of the raw materials used. Just gently shake well before applying it.
